Hello, our names are Anthony and Arabella and we are Archangel Pigeons.
We don’t know exactly how old we are but we are not ancient. I am
the more diminutive one on the left and Anthony is the handsome one
on the right. We were taken from our aviary and roughly shoved into
a metal box with no perches or bedding. We had to sit on the cold
metal floor and balance as best we could on the journey to the market.
We had never been to a market before and most certainly never want
to go to one again. The noise was overwhelming and people kept trying
to poke us in our metal box and shout at us to make us move. They
shoved their faces right up to the wire on our box and laughed. It
was terrifying for us. We are only small birds and usually peaceful.
There were other unfortunate birds and some small animals in cages
all around us and we could feel their fear. Some of them were so
distressed and making a lot of noise. A lady came to look at us
and she was quiet, not like the others. The next thing we knew this
quiet lady was taking us away from the market in her car. We were
still frightened but felt that something good was about to happen.
It did. We came here to the Sanctuary where we share our accommodation
with the two black rabbits who don’t seem to mind. Well they are
at floor level and we are higher up. We just have to be a bit considerate
when we decide to go to the loo. We feel confident here and have
lots of interesting things to watch all day. We never realised there
were so many different birds and animals in the world. We are fortunate
to be together and we want to stay together here in the peaceful
safety of the Sanctuary. No more markets. Please sponsor us we
only cost £10 a year.
