My name is HILARY. I think I nearly died when I was born. I can’t remember much about it but Janet told me that I was brought to the Sanctuary by the man who had bred me. I was tiny and wet and felt like a piece of ice. I was barely breathing and hardly conscious. Janet felt I was very close to death. She put me in a sink filled with warm water and spent half an hour massaging my body. Eventually I moved my head and bleated very weakly. I was rubbed dry with a towel and Poppy the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel helped with that, but I don’t remember. I opened my eyes and started to move around so Janet put me in a box on top of the Raeburn cooker. I can remember the warmth from the cooker it was the first time I had felt warm. Then I was wrapped up again and taken to a kind man who gave me a painful injection – antibiotics apparently – he did it in my best interests as I had been lying in mud. When we got back from the vet I had my first taste of food. This came from a bottle. I felt so much better after that with a full tummy and all the warmth. I got my name because of my distinctive ability to climb out of any box I am put into. It became a bit of a hobby in those first few weeks at the Sanctuary. Janet would leave me in my box, go to do some jobs and come back to find I had climbed out and got into bed with one of the dogs. Well it was much more snuggly curled up with them and they didn’t seem to mind. Cherry the fat Basset even washed me.
